History

A history of yoga, with the arguments left in.

These pages stay with checkable books and a few public pages. Where a date is disputed, it is labeled. Where a quotation would have to be invented, it is left out.

This hub is a reading path through yoga history with the arguments left visible. The timeline marks a point as dated, approximate, or disputed. The articles underneath follow the same rule. We would rather skip a quotation than invent one, and we would rather name a book than repeat a story whose source we could not open.

The path starts with the Indus cities and the question of whether a seal shows a yoga pose. It moves through the Vedas and Upanishads, Patanjali’s eight limbs, the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, Vivekananda’s 1893 talks, Krishnamacharya and his students, and the names of modern class styles. The last article is about how to read a claim: what a date is allowed to mean, and what a beginner site is for.

History pages are not instructions for a medical condition. When an article mentions back pain or research, it points at the journal piece that cites the review, and it does not turn that citation into a promise. The editorial standards explain how sources are chosen. The byline on each article names the Peaceful Yoga Path editorial team and the date the pages were last updated.

Use the timeline as a map, then open the article if you want the paragraphs. Trivia questions about history are taken from these articles, so a quiz answer should match the page. If it does not, the page and the question need a correction, not a smoother story.

  1. Third millennium BCE · Disputed

    Indus cities

Harappa and Mohenjo-daro flourished in the third millennium BCE. Their script is still undeciphered. A seated figure on a seal is not readable proof of yoga postures.

  2. Toward 1750 BCE · Disputed

    The cities decline

A UCLA summary, drawing on older histories, describes a long decay and says the end is unexplained. Scholars do not agree on a single cause.

  3. First millennium BCE, centuries disputed · Approximate

    Vedas and Upanishads

Early Sanskrit uses yoga for yoking. Later Upanishads discuss discipline and meditation. Exact centuries are not settled.

  4. Early centuries CE, date disputed · Disputed

    Patanjali's Yoga Sutras

The eight limbs are written here. Asana is one limb: a steady, comfortable seat, not a catalog of modern standing poses.

  5. Often placed in the 15th century · Approximate

    Hatha Yoga Pradipika

Attributed to Svatmarama. A short hatha manual, not the first hatha text and not a modern pose encyclopedia.

  6. 11 September 1893 · Dated

    Vivekananda in Chicago

A transcription of The Complete Works dates his Response to Welcome at the Parliament of Religions to this day.

  7. Early 20th century · Approximate

    Krishnamacharya and his students

Iyengar, Pattabhi Jois, and Desikachar taught different methods that shaped studio yoga. The decade-by-decade record is fuller in their own books than in a single timeline dot.

  8. 2017 · Dated

    Roots of Yoga

James Mallinson and Mark Singleton publish a Penguin Classics collection of premodern yoga texts.
